Utility-based resource allocations in multi-hop wireless networks

2011

It is well known that CSMA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access) protocols exhibit very poor performance in case of multi-hop transmissions, because of inter-link interference due to imperfect carrier sensing. Since ad-hoc networks based on multihop packet deliveries are becoming more and more common in different application and networking scenarios, different medium access control extensions are currently considered for improving the channel utilization efficiency. In this paper, we propose a simple approach based on preallocating temporal slots in which different sets of nodes are allowed to contend for the channel access, which can significantly improve CSMA performance with limited signaling …

Joint Dynamic Resource Allocation for Coupled Heterogeneous Wireless Networks Based on Hopfield Neural Networks

2008

This paper proposes an algorithm to solve the problem of Joint Dynamic Resource Allocation in heterogeneous wireless networks. The algorithm is based on Hopfield Neural Networks to achieve fast and suboptimal solutions. The generic formulation is particularized and evaluated in an HSDPA and 802.11e WLAN coupled networks. Some illustrative simulations results are presented to evaluate the performance of the new algorithm as compared with other strategies. The obtained results confirm the validity of the proposal.

SDN@home: A Method for Controlling Future Wireless Home Networks

2016

Recent advances in wireless networking technologies are leading toward the proliferation of novel home network applications. However, the landscape of emerging scenarios is fragmented due to their varying technological requirements and the heterogeneity of current wireless technologies. We argue that the development of flexible software-defined wireless architectures, including such efforts as the wireless MAC processor, coupled with SDN concepts, will enable the support of both emerging and future home applications. In this article, we first identify problems with managing current home networks composed of separate network segments governed by different technologies. Second, we point out t…

Demystifying the Possibilities of ICT4D in the Mountain Regions of Nepal

2011

Author's version of a chapter in the book: Proceedings of the 44th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/HICSS.2011.142 Despite the substantial investments in ICT4D projects in developing countries, the benefits are yet to be realised by the majority of remote communities. Inaccessibility to ICT has widened educational, healthcare, information, and communication gaps between urban and remote communities. This paper focuses on an interpretive case study in Nepal to widen our understanding of how locally-initiated ICT4D projects may help to narrow these gaps. The study utilises the Assets Pentagon Model to identify …

On the approximability of the range assignment problem on radio networks in presence of selfish agents

2005

AbstractWe consider the range assignment problem in ad-hoc wireless networks in the context of selfish agents: A network manager aims to assigning transmission ranges to the stations in order to achieve strong connectivity of the network within a minimal overall power consumption. Station is not directly controlled by the manager and may refuse to transmit with a certain transmission range because it might be costly in terms of power consumption. We investigate the existence of payment schemes which induce the stations to follow the decisions of a network manager in computing a range assignment, that is, truthful mechanisms for the range assignment problem. We provide both positive and negat…

A CAPWAP Architecture for Automatic Frequency Planning in WLAN

2007

Recently, the impressive success of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN technology has dramatically changed the role of the wireless connectivity provisioning. Born as a wireless extension of small office or home networks, todays the WLANs are getting more and more popular as a large, even metropolitan, area networks. The deployment of large-scale WLANs has some critical issues, because of the lack of coordinated management functionalities among the network nodes. In this paper we briefly describe the CAPWAP architectural solution, for centralizing some control and maintenance functionalities in large scale WLAN, by guaranteeing the interoperability between network nodes provided by different vendors. We …

Dielectric characterization of biocompatible hydrogels for application to Epidermal RFID devices

2015

Functionalized skin-like membranes are currently under investigation for the design of a new class of Epidermal Electronics devices for sensing and healing applications. The dynamic response of epidermal antennas in presence of absorption and release of fluids is a key-point to design RFID radio-sensors and actuators. This paper addresses the characterization of the dielectric property of PVA-based biocompatible hydrogel membranes in the UHF RFID band by means of a modified ring resonator. Samples having different compositions are measured in the dry state as well as when exposed to a progressive release of body fluids emulating perspirations or wound exudates. It was found that the permitt…

Research Direction for Developing an Infrastructure for Mobile & Wireless Systems: Consensus Report of the NSF Workshop Held on October 15, 2001 …

2002

The recent NSF Workshop on Infrastructure for Mobile and Wireless Systems, held on Oct. 15, 2001 in Phoenix had a goal of defining and establishing a common infrastructure for the discipline of mobile wireless networking. This consensus-based paper is the outcome of that workshop. The paper provides a foundation for implementation, standardization, and further research and discussion on the issues of what should constitute such an infrastructure. Workshop participants came from many different wireless communities, including those of communications, operating systems, core networking, mobility, databases, and middleware. The workshop presented various research directions in the field and inc…

Performance Analysis in Spatially Correlated IEEE 802.11 Networks

2012

Wireless mesh networks are difficult to be characterized, especially under multi-hop traffic streams. The problem is that the local view of the channel and the correlation between the buffers of consecutive nodes in a stream path make complicated the identification of the contention level perceived by each station along the time. Such a figure is used in the models based on the so called decoupling assumption for evaluating the final scheduling of simultaneous channel access grants. In this paper we propose a simplified mesh network model focused on capturing the correlation due to the network topology and traffic routes rather than the access protocol state at each node. To this purpose, w…

2010

Published version of an article from the journal: Wireless Personal Communications. The original publication is available at Spingerlink. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11277-009-9907-9 While bandwidth for Internet access in urban areas is steadily increasing in recent years, many rural areas are still suffering from the effect of the digital divide. This paper presents a broadband Internet access paradigm developed in the context of the ADHOCSYS project, which was financed by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Program Information and Society Technologies, within the strategic objective of Broadband for All. Aiming at providing reliable Internet access in rural and mountainous regi…
